Appliance Talk Fridges & Freezers Fridges & Freezers Kitchen Stuff about appliances you'd be an idiot not to read

Growing up as a child, I remember we were always freezing things in a deepfreeze located in our garage. At the time I didn’t think much of it, but the older I got, the more it made sense.  As grocery prices rose, sales in the supermarket never looked more appealing.

But there always seemed to be one recurring problem; the best sale items are always in bulk, and even if they’re not, you can’t but help but want to buy 5 or more of the items before the sale ends. That is indeed where having a larger deep freeze comes in handy.

Below is a (small) list of different foods you can freeze. Some of them you may already know, but some may surprise you.

Grapes and other fruit

Have you noticed that grapes don’t taste as good during the winter months as they do during the summer? Well, if you’re anything like me, you stuff your face with grapes during summer, then hold out all winter until the warm months start again.

THIS DOESN’T HAVE TO BE THE CASE ANY LONGER! Buy the sweet yummy grapes in bulk during summer, and then freeze them for all year round goodness. And as a bonus, grapes are delicious frozen!

You can freeze pretty much all fruits if you’re planning on using them in smoothies, but if you’re planning on freezing fruit to eat, it’s safer to freeze harder fruits, as these won’t become too soggy.

A great tip to freezing fruit is to make sure they’re all washed, dried, and divided up into smaller potions. These make storing and accessing your frozen fruits easier.

Milk

As milk expands when it freezes, it’s best to make sure there is enough room in the bottle or container you use when freezing.

This is also handy for mums and bubs that are breast-feeding.  Freeze your breast milk, and then thaw it out when needed. Never waste milk again!

Eggs

Crack eggs into a freezer bags, and freeze for later. You can also crack them into ice cube trays for easier access.

Herbs

A smart way of freezing herbs is in ice-cube tray with a little water or stock. This is great for soups, stews, and casseroles.

Potato chips

Freeze your leftover potato chips to stop them from going stale. Frozen chips also taste better, so eat them straight out of the freezer!

Bread and Baked goods

Stock up on your favourite bread while it’s on sale and freeze it. A great tip for defrosting these goods is to place them in your microwave overnight. The microwave keeps them from drying out.

Sandwiches and Breakfast muffins

For a real timesaver, freeze your sandwiches the night before. Your sandwiches will thaw out by lunchtime. This is a great way to keep the bread fresher, and will also keep any meat you use cold. There is nothing worse than warm sandwiches.

Tip: Place foods such as tomatoes and lettuce in separate containers and put them in your sandwich when you’re ready to eat. This will ensure no soggy bits are eaten.

Another great timesaving tip for those who are constantly on the run is to make breakfast muffins using scrambled eggs, bacon, sausages, and English muffins. Wrap them individually in cling film, and pull them out in the morning. Zap them in the microwave and enjoy.

Cooked meals

Instead of constantly buying takeaways or skipping dinners when you’re rushed off your feet, make double batches of the meals you cook, and freeze them in containers. Simply defrost the meals and reheat them when needed.

Dairy

If anything, cheese and other diary products can be quite expensive, especially when buying for larger households. A great tip for cheese is to slice and grate it before freezing, as it will crumble otherwise.

 Baking goods

Baking goods such as chocolate, nuts, flour and sugar can all be frozen to keep them fresher for longer. A great tip to freeze these items is to use empty show boxes as these stack well and allow for ventilation.
