After several long months of renovating, a $100,000 refurbishment of the Sydney Children’s Hospital ICU Parent Hostel was officially unveiled last week (March 18) – and Appliances Online was there to help.

The mammoth makeover was the brainchild of Brooke Hulsman and her husband Lee, who wanted to honour the memory of this 10-month-old son Lachlan.

Brooke and Lee sadly lost their son in August 2011 after he was diagnosed with a congenital heart complication called dilated cardiomyopathy – meaning that his heart was three times too big for his body.

The parents had utilised the hostel during their son’s stay at the hospital, and wanted to create a more comfortable space for those who would be staying there in the future.

The seven-room hostel is used by 500 families each year, and features three bathrooms, two kitchens areas, two loungerooms and a laundry area.

Appliances Online helped to fit out the two kitchen areas, donating a stainless steel Whirlpool Butler fridge and a stainless steel Electrolux fridge, along with two microwaves, a washing machine and a dryer.

“These [kinds of appliances] are things that you would take for granted at home, but when you’re away from home this is the stuff that you crave,” Brooke explained.

According to Appliances Online general manager Peter Harris, there was no hesitation in supplying the necessary products to the cause.

“The vision that Renovation Rainbow and Pillars of Strength had for the hostel was just outstanding, and a true testament to how powerful a parent’s love can be,” he said.

“The generosity of Brooke and the volunteers needed to be matched, so Appliances Online was more than happy to do what we do best – supply quality appliances to those who needed it most.”

All the way from the land of the flightless bird, Krissy brings a part of New Zealand culture to the Appliances Online content team. And although she is adamant she does not say 'fush and chups', she can't deny her continuous use of the term 'sweet as' and her ongoing argument with her team on the correct name for jandals (thongs). One thing is for certain, however, her passion for her kiwi slang is matched with her love for sharing news, hacks and buying tips for all things appliances! Krissy's favourite appliance is the Tefal Cook4Me multi cooker, as she believes it's ok to let an appliance do all the work for you.
