With a little over a week left on the clock for Appliances Online’s New Years Sale, employees for the online retailer have today revealed their favourite appliances on sale.

During the survey, which was conducted over freshly brewed cups of coffee made by resident espresso machines, the subject of portable air conditioners featured as a hot topic of discussion at the online retailer’s headquarters in Sydney this morning. And while January’s heat combined with a high staff coffee intake might indicate that air conditioners and espresso machines would be top picks, the survey found whitegood appliances to be the most popular items on sale.

Coming in first in the whitegoods category is the humble dryer, and specifically, the 5-kilogram Electrolux Dryer ($397, EDV505). Appliances Online staff said that a saving of $222, down 36 per cent from $619 made this dryer “exceptionally affordable.” It’s anti-creasing feature, was also singled out as an added advantage. The vented dryer gently rotates clothing back and forth for about half an hour after the drying cycle to reduce wrinkles and the need for ironing. One staff member also pointed out that summer was a good time of year to purchase a dryer. “These sales aren’t always around come winter when a dryer is really handy,” she said.

Another summer sale favourite revealed in the survey – amongst men especially – was the barbeque. This year, the Beefeater BBQ ($1,197, 48250) has been selected by staff as the top outdoor appliance. The five-burner Beefeater features rust-free porcelain enamel coated cast-iron cooktops, a warming rack, stainless steel vaporizers to reduce flare-ups, and an integrated temperature thermometer. As part of the Appliances Online New Years Sale, this barbeque offers a 20 per cent discount, down from $1,499, offering a saving of $302.  “You never regret buying a good barbeque,” states Jonathan. This could be something to keep in mind with Australia Day a week away when barbeques will be alight across the continent.

Having once had to sit on the washing machine to stop it from bouncing into oblivion, Keri is today delighted with the new (smoother running) technologies that make housework easier every day. A self-confessed lazy-bones, Keri seeks out quirky inventions that ease the human workload, such as the robotic vacuum cleaner (wow). And as soon as someone figures out a Jetsons-like self-cleaning house, she will happily lay her pen to rest and retire from appliance journalism. Until then, her pick is a fridge that will tell her smartphone when it's time to pick up more beer on the way home. Magic.
