Barbeque more than just meat patties and sausages this summer – Unexpected things you can grill on your BBQ
October 1st, 2015
Summer is near, and in Australia that usually means beaches, barbeques and family outings to water parks. So I thought it would be a smart idea to write a list of the unexpected things you can grill or cook on your BBQ.
There are many different types, sizes and ranges of BBQs you can purchase these days, and Appliances Online have made it easier for Aussies to see the difference between each one before making an actual purchase.
If you want to try something new, and maybe even get a bit fancy with your BBQ cooking skills, try a few foods from the list below and surprise your family and guests this summer:
Avocado
Avocados are amazing, and thanks to the availability of Hass avocados, you can enjoy them all year round, even on your BBQ.
Simply cut the avocado in half (leaving the skin on), take out the seed, and coat with oil (olive oil is best). Place the cut side down on the BBQ and grill for five to seven minutes.
Top with salsa and Greek yogurt, and enjoy with either tortilla chips, or just in spoonfuls.
Homemade wedges
For a healthier alternative to store bought fries, try making your own on the BBQ.
Cut potatoes into wedges (or use a chip cutter), toss with oil (use coconut oil for an even healthier version), and season with salt and pepper as desired.
Once all the wedges are coated evenly, grill on the BBQ for about 10 minutes each side. Sweet potato also makes tasty wedges!
Did someone say grilled ice cream?!
For all you ice cream fanatics out there, with this recipe you can now enjoy ice cream (seen above in its non-grilled state) in a whole different light!
Use your BBQ (and this recipe) to add a crispy grilled outer batter to your yummy frozen treat.
Fruit
For added sweetness to your breakfast, try grilling different fruit on the BBQ.
Grapes, watermelon, pineapple, and berries work well.
To grill berries, simply create a lemon and sugar mixture and add your berries. Pour the mixture in aluminum foil, seal up the sides, and then place on the BBQ over medium heat for about 10 minutes. Yum!
Yaki Onigiri (Grilled rice balls)
Now if you want to get real fancy, try grilling Japanese style rice balls on your BBQ, and really surprise your party guests.
Vegetables
To try and get your family to eat more veggies this summer, grill them on the BBQ, and tell the kids it’s something different to try! Carrots, mushrooms, asparagus, sweet potatoes, corn, and cabbage all work well. You can even BBQ cos lettuce for your Caesar salads.
Desserts
After all the savoury goodness, it’s always nice to tuck into something sweet. Here are my top four BBQ dessert picks:
Grilled pineapple with brown sugar rum sauce
Bon BBQ appetit!
