5 weird and awesome ways to love bacon

Appliance Talk

Woohoo! It’s Australian Bacon Week at last!

The little piggy can get a bit of a bad wrap sometimes, what with all the fat and all, but don’t be rash…pork is also a powerhouse meat and an excellent source of:

  • Protein
  • vitamin B12
  • vitamin B6
  • thiamin
  • Niacin

You don’t have to take my word for it – a true bacon buff, one Homer Simpson, thinks pigs are a “wonderful, magical animal!”

Let’s mix things up this Bacon Week with five fantastically alternative ways to enjoy the daily rind, including a sexy way to enjoy bacon.

Breakfast of champions

How far does your love of bacon go? Enough to start the day with a bacon smoothie?

Blend cooked bacon bits with milk and ice cream. You might even like to add a drop of vanilla essence or two.

The out-there lads at Gizmodo reckon it’s a goer, but we think that a bacon shake a day could keep the appetite at bay.

A sweet bacon treat

It’s the stuff of a Homer Simpson drool: chocolate covered bacon.

Hailing from the United States (where else?) some call it Pig Lickers, others call it Pig Candy.

Cook the bacon first, let it cool, then dip it in melted chocolate, place it on a plate and cool in the fridge. Try topping your piggy delights with sea salt, crumbled pistachio or almond bits.

Don’t forget to clean your teeth

Anyone who has recently been to the dentist will preach about the benefits of flossing every day. I’m not so sure, but I could be convinced if they offered me bacon floss!

That’s right, it’s floss that tastes like “crispy fried bacon” and you can buy it online. Go a step further and get toothpaste and bacon toothpicks for that extra thorough clean.

Drink and be merry

With 007 suave, order a bacon martini, shaken not stirred.

To do this you’ll need to bacon wash some vodka.

The Republic of Bacon suggests cooking up some bacon and eating it (yum) then mixing in the vodka with the left-over grease from the pan. Stir it all in together nicely and allow it to cool.

Now, you can store this concoction for up to a couple of weeks to really let the juices mingle.

When you’re ready, poke a hole through the fatty layer that will have formed on the top and pour the vodka out.

Ta da! You have a smokey, if not bacony drink. Pop it in a martini glass, add a couple of crispy rashers and you’re on.

Bacon sex

Time to bring home the bacon, baby! Yeah!

What, you don’t know what bacon sex is?

Well, I’m not entirely sure either. But a woman by the name of Sarah Katherine Lewis does and she’s written a book all about it. It’s called Sex and Bacon: Why I Love Things That Are Very, Very Bad for Me. Sounds good.

She reckons that both can become addictive and all consuming and that food and sex are an explosive combination. ReOW!

Apparently, “It’s a celebration that honors the rawness and base needs that are central to our experiences of both food and sex.”

(There’s no picture for this one, sorry. We’ll leave the sizzle up to your imagination!)

 NB:

This is the third annual National Bacon Week put on by Australian Pork Limited to encourage Aussies to buy Aussie-grown pork. It runs from 18 to 25 March so there’s still four whole days to try these weird and awesome ways to enjoy bacon. Get into it!

Having once had to sit on the washing machine to stop it from bouncing into oblivion, Keri is today delighted with the new (smoother running) technologies that make housework easier every day. A self-confessed lazy-bones, Keri seeks out quirky inventions that ease the human workload, such as the robotic vacuum cleaner (wow). And as soon as someone figures out a Jetsons-like self-cleaning house, she will happily lay her pen to rest and retire from appliance journalism. Until then, her pick is a fridge that will tell her smartphone when it's time to pick up more beer on the way home. Magic.

I’d like to add two more examples bacon-related shenanigans:
