Kitchens are a significant investment and it’s important to ensure that they are not outdated by changing trends.

The French are famous for it: classic fashion that stands firm in the flux and flow of ever-changing trends.

Future proofing a kitchen means incorporating timeless elements that won’t become old hat, even in years to come.

This can often involve conservative ideas, such as simple designs and monotone coloured appliances instead of brightly coloured or statement appliances. If you do want to add some pizazz try adding retro or brightly coloured small appliances that can be reomoved from the benchtop at anytime.

Future proofing is not only about style. Environmentally friendly features are a priority for home owners, and this is unlikely to change in the foreseeable future.

Incorporating water and energy saving appliances are a good selling point in any kitchen.

It also pays to be mindful of how space is being used. Consider that the kitchen is a room for entertaining and so space should be maximised to make room for socialising. Island benches are popular as guests can mingle together while the home chef creates.

Bench space is also important, so be sure there is enough cabinet space and shelving to store away benchtop appliances easily.

The concealment of some appliances is also a way to make the kitchen into more of a ‘living room’. Integrated appliances such as fridges and dishwashers work well.

A future proofed kitchen should be convenient, efficient and a pleasure to be in.
