New Greenhood to clean and purify kitchen air
June 6th, 2012
We know all about rangehoods, right? They extract smoke, steam, grease and cooking aromas from the air in your kitchen, to help keep the area clean and pleasant to inhabit.
Some rangehoods are ducted and exhaust the kitchen gases outside of your home, while others recirculate air back into your kitchen after cleaning it with a carbon filter. Pretty straightforward, right? Can’t be much room for improvement…
Well, Italian kitchen-maker, Snaidero, has teamed up with appliance-maker, Falmec, to design the Greenhood – a recirculating rangehood that not only cleanses your kitchen’s air of cooking gases, but integrates an ioniser to purify the air.
The Greenhood:
- Transforms volatile organic compounds into water and carbon dioxide through the use of a bipolar electric field;
- Deactivates viruses, bacteria and allergens by breaking down their external membranes;
- Neutralizes mildew, fungi and spores and tobacco smoke, and;
- Eliminates particulates from the air.
Not only will your kitchen no longer smell like bacon, but it’ll be relatively free of disease-spreading germs, allergens, and other impurities that can cause sickness and discomfort. The Greenhood is even capable of purifying your kitchen’s air supply when you’re not cooking, integrating an embedded air-quality sensor that changes colour from yellow to green as the air quality improves.
Finally, the Greenhood doesn’t just do away with air ducts, but it’s capable of hanging freely from cables, rather than having to be installed into a wall or ceiling, thus creating an interesting and unique look for the design of your kitchen.
All of this shiny new technology does come at a cost, though. Although the Greenhood is simple to install almost anywhere, it’s understood to be quite heavy, with hefty power requirements, meaning you won’t be able to just rearrange the design of your kitchen on a whim. Also, the Greenhood’s price point is not yet available, so it may end up setting you back quite a bit.
