Kitchen trends: Benches, drawers and impressive appliances can turn hearth of the home into the heart of the home.

“The kitchen should be the heart of the home!” Peter Latemore says enthusiastically.

“No one wants to poke about in a dingy kitchen while the rest of the family is in another room,” he tells us at the Home Show in Brisbane.

Cooking has become a thing of pleasure, not a chore, and now we like to enjoy it together. So we have either a joined kitchen/living area, or a big table bang in the middle of a kitchen which wraps around it.”Kitchen trendsLatemore is a heritage building designer and he says one of the more prominent kitchen trends is the use of integrated appliances.”Fridges and dishwashers especially are being integrated to sit flush with cupboards.

It’s done very well by brands such as Smeg and Siemens.”Wine preservation storage, fridges with ice-makers and warming drawers are also increasingly popular.”Ranges are really impressive these days. They’re like pieces of art themselves!”Interesting looking rangehoods add appeal.”

Caesarstone benches and granite continue to be in high demand because they look good, are stain resistant and hardworking.

Soft-close drawers are regarded as a sophisticated complement to a renovated kitchen. Some even offer a handle-less design for minimalistic oriented kitchens.

“Whether it’s the cooking shows or what, we’re spending a lot more time in the kitchen, we’re more dedicated to preparing good meals. So it’s important that however it is, it works and looks, that you’re comfortable and that you enjoy being there.”

Sofia loves to keep things clean. Vacuum cleaners, giant washing machines and jumbo dishwashers hum away in her abode daily. Obsessive? Maybe. Passionate about appliances? For sure! She has been writing about appliance trends and happenings since 2010.
