A little water goes a long way in a steam dishwasher and appliance makers such as LG and V-Zug are eager to spruik the technology.

Steam dishwashers use jets of high-pressure, high-temperature steam at different stages of the cleaning cycle. At the start, steam may be used to soften stubborn stuck-on food and at the end of the cycle steam may be used to give a hygienic clean without the need for pre-used water.

Using leading-edge technology means these dishwashers are advanced in their programming as well, according V-Zug’s Australian general manager, Mark Swan.

“Our Adora model, for example, uses intuitive programming to determine how clean the load is. So a 2 hour programme can be automatically cut to 60 minutes if the dishwasher recognises clean dishes.”

This automatic function could help combat consumer complaints that steam dishwashers take longer to clean than regular dishwashers. And it checks the energy efficiency box.

Steam dishwashers also require less water than regular dishwashers.

According to LG, it only takes one drop of water to create 1,600 steam molecules. The result, it says, “is superior performance that is exceptionally gentle, regardless of how tough the grime or delicate the dish is.”

The new LG model in Australia features a SmartRack function for adjustable baskets, as well as an AutoCycle that uses a soil sensor to detect water clarity, automatically adjusting washing time, temperature and number of rinses required.
