How to Clean a Washing Machine

Contrary to popular belief, even washing machines require a clean now and then. If your clothes are retaining odor or do not come out as clean as they used to, it might be time to clean your washing machine. The first step is emptying the washing machine and getting rid of the odor by adding a cup of white vinegar as the machine fills up with hot water. Now, run the machine through an entire wash and rinse cycle and add 1 cup of borax into the washer as it fills with water, wait for the agitator to begin turning before adding soured laundry to the washer.

If your laundry was soured by the washing machine, you can soak the laundry for about 20-30 minutes to remove any previous odor. Add a detergent with fragrance to add that special touch to your laundry.

We have a LG 6.5kg turbo drum which seems to grow algae. We have tried the above and also using dishwasher cleaner but to no avail, the cloths still come out with black flecks on them. Any suggestions?

    Hi,

I would try a hot wash and/or baking soda, however not at the same time. Good luck with it!

My Aunt has a relatively new fisher and pykel washing mashine, it has recently been asking her to “clean me” as it has an electronic function that askes herto press the circle button. She cannot find her owners manual and would like some help in rectifying this problem, if someone can help it would be very appreciated.

I assume that you have the “Aqua Smart”, it would be asking you to do a bowl clean. What you should do is go into the menu and scroll to “life cycles” and scroll through the “life cycles” menu and select “bowl clean”. It will then prompt you as to what you need to do for this.

If you have any further questions in regards to this you may need to contact Fisher and Paykel customer care on 1300 650 725.

    I hope this helps.

I only use cold water in my washing machine, so how can I get the musty smell out without using hot water?

  6. John Says:

I would use a handful of Bi Carbonate Soda and put the machine through a full cycle empty. If you have a front loader make sure you are leaving the door ajar whenever possible and the washing machine is not in use, this will prevent the inside from sealing and creating a smell.

    Hope this helps.
